A very very (super early) Good Morning to you there~ I’m
back after a semi-hiatus with MYNAME’s “Hello & Goodbye”. This song has
actually kept its spot in my playlist for more than a month now, earning itself
a good reputation in my ears. I’m not much of a fan for slow ballad song.
Usually I’m more of a dramatic/orchestra-insert type with a touch of beats.
This song indeed fits the bill :D Before jumping into the MV, here’s a little
intro to the members’ name according to their appearance in the MV:
This time, it’s a little hard for me to be fair in analysing
because I absolutely love the song but NOT the MV L not the full version
specifically. There’s 2 versions; the full version & the dance version. The
reason I don’t like it is because I’m just not pulled into it like how “I
Remember” did. The plot in the MV is basically about a guy (Gunwoo) falling in
love with a girl(she seriously looks familiar) but it didn’t turn out good,
having her killed by her supposedly jealous boyfriend(aka. Mafia leader). I’m
not convinced enough at the level of chemistry the 2 had. The girl appears to
be flirting with him, giving a sort of dominant-feel whilst Gunwoo just stares
on at her with puppy-eyes. When I first watched the MV, I could not relate it to
the lyrics (keep in mind, not knowing hangul, relying on English parts) but
when I read the translation, I kinda got it. I’ll talk about the lyrics later
on. Continuing, the MV’s arrangement of settings & member’s appearance is
of the norm, having drama shots, group shots, individual shots BUT I have to
point out that Chaejin barely made the screen, having only roughly 2 clearly
shots of him. The non-drama shots are ok, no complaints there (with the
exception of Chaejin -__-). There are 3
sets used in both MVs:
Every member portray sad, longing expressions, matching the
song. Insoo especially portrayed the most, cringing & eyes closed. Good job
Insoo ^^
There’s nothing much
I can say for the MV honestly. The story is quite clear & simple. The
fighting scene was quite realistic (blood on Gunwoo looks real enough) but the “bloody
scene” didn’t do justice. Notice how Gunwoo did not react to the gunshot on his
back? How is that possible??He shouldn’t be able to walk peacefully after being
shot in the back.
Gunwoo ALMOST nailed the character because I felt some flaws
in his innocent-wide-eye moments (feels a little awkward) BUT round of applause
to his lost-dreamy-depressed look after the girl dies. Gunwoo pulled it off
perfectly! (credits to his hair) check it out below:
OK, now I will be jumping to the lyrics. On first read of
the translation, I was honestly confused on whether the English was
unintentionally weird (hangul translated to English can be pretty bizarre) or ‘what
you see is what you get’. I had to re-read it a couple of times before I got
the meaning (although it’s just my own interpretation). There seems to be some
confusion going on in the sentences expressed. In some parts, the guy regrets
being separated from the girl & desires her back but in other parts, he
assures her he’s doing fine alone. Maybe this is just him feeling confused with
himself, torn between longing and moving on. Here’s the catch; this song,
instead of eternal love & loyalty, it talks about dating where it starts
with getting together & ending apart (“after dating, separation always
comes”). Hence, the repetition of “Hello & Goodbye”. Overall, I think the
songwriter was trying to put in too much emotions that listeners get confuse of
what the main point is. If you go according to the song’s flow; he painfully longs
for her but defends himself by claiming he’s doing better than her / she
betrayed him by turning her back, he still wants her back / it’s no use
fighting against fate, they were just not meant to be together. The chorus on
one side talks about him assuring her that everything will be fine on their
own. Again, I feel the songwriter overdid the emotions/situations. It would’ve
been better if he/she had stuck to one situation. Fortunately, I never really
care for the translation. As long as the melody/tune pulls my ear, it’s a green
light to my playlist.
Talking about the melody, I like how the strong intro
immediately pulls your attention to the song. The on-going beats throughout the
song helps keep listeners head-bobbing along, giving a fresh appeal. As
mentioned before, the song has a dance version MV, displaying a nice
choreography. When I first heard the song, I was immediately pulled & from
there on, had it on my playlist till now. It helps bring up my mood whenever I
feel down or frustrated. The rap inserts complements the beat, at the same time
matching the self-conflicting feel in the song (referring to JunQ’s tone).
Overall, thumbs up J
MYNAME definitely caught my heart with this artwork.
That’s all I have to say for MYNAME’s “Hello & Goodbye”.
Sorry if I sound confusing but trust me, I myself am STILL a little confused
with it (@__@) hope it helped you in discovering new songs to listen to ^^ if
you’re into ballad-pop songs, I truly recommend this song. I’m all for the
dance version!!! Look out for the dance break part where ALL MEMBERS pulled
individual hand-stand stunts!!! :D
Here it is, enjoy!!!

PS: Again, extra screen shots ^^ many complained on Gunwoo’s
hair but I find it quite unique. It makes him look all artsy & cool but it
has to be slightly wavy, not straight like in the drama shots (geeky weird).
